Pre-shipment inspection in China: what it costs and what to check

How third-party pre-shipment inspection works for packaging orders made in China, what it costs (about $330–$750 per visit), and the checklist we use for boxes and clamshells.

A pre-shipment inspection is the last chance to catch problems while your packaging is still at the factory — and while you still hold the final payment. Here's how it works, what it costs and what we check on boxes and clamshells.

How it works

  1. Production reaches roughly 80–100% complete and packed.
  2. An independent inspector visits the factory (no notice to the line workers about which cartons get pulled).
  3. Random samples are pulled using a standard sampling plan (AQL) and checked against your approved sample and spec.
  4. You get a photo report the same or next day: pass, fail or hold with the issues listed.
  5. Only after a pass (or fixes and re-inspection) is the balance paid and the goods shipped.

What it costs

Across the inspections on our packaging orders, a standard pre-shipment inspection ran about $330 per visit, double inspections around $660, and a factory audit around $750. On an order of 50,000 boxes, that's well under a penny per piece.

What we check on rigid and magnetic boxes

  • Print color vs. the approved proof; registration and scuffing
  • Magnet strength, lid alignment and closure
  • Wrap adhesion, corners, bubbling
  • Insert fit with the actual product
  • Dimensions, master carton strength, counts and shipping marks

What we check on clamshells and blisters

  • Material clarity and thickness (cloudy or thin spots)
  • Cracks or stress whitening at hinges and corners
  • Fit with the product and closure strength
  • Trimming, sharp edges and flash
  • Nesting, carton counts and carton marks

Real-world catches

"Hold" results are more common than outright fails. On our orders, inspectors have flagged missing shipping-mark specifications, carton sizes that didn't match the printed marks, and finish issues on magnetic boxes — all fixed before the goods left, instead of being discovered at the warehouse.

Tip: give the inspector your approved physical sample (or a golden sample kept at the factory) and a written spec. Inspectors can only check against what they're told.

Inspection is built into how we work

Frequently asked questions

How much does a pre-shipment inspection cost in China?

Typically about $330–$750 per inspection visit (one inspector-day is the common unit). Factory audits and multi-day inspections cost more.

When should the inspection happen?

When production is at least 80% complete and packed, so the inspector can pull random samples from finished cartons — and before you pay the final balance.

What happens if an inspection fails?

The factory reworks or replaces the defective goods and a re-inspection is booked. Because the balance is paid only after a pass, the factory has every incentive to fix it.

Is inspection worth it on small orders?

On orders under a few thousand dollars it can be proportionally expensive. On five- and six-figure packaging orders it's cheap insurance.
