How much do custom rigid boxes cost?

Real factory prices for custom magnetic and rigid boxes at 1,500 to 40,000+ units, what drives the price, and how freight and duties change your landed cost per box.

Custom rigid boxes — especially magnetic-closure gift boxes — make products feel premium. They also vary wildly in price. Here are real factory prices from orders we've managed, what moves the number, and how to compare quotes properly.

Real factory prices

All CMYK-printed wraps on about 2 mm chipboard, sourced from the same printing factory over two years:

BoxQuantityFactory price / box
Small magnetic box20,000$0.54
Small magnetic box10,000$0.49
Small magnetic box with sponge insert7,400–16,600$0.52
Small box, scratch-proof lamination11,000 per design × 4 designs$0.51
Large magnetic box2,500–6,700$0.64–$0.74
2-pack retail box30,000–40,000$0.50
6- and 8-pack retail boxes1,500 each$0.95

Two takeaways: price is surprisingly stable once you're above a few thousand units, and small runs of large boxes cost the most per unit (the 1,500-unit multi-pack boxes ran nearly double the 2-pack price).

What drives rigid box pricing

  • Size — more board, more paper, more freight space.
  • Closure — magnetic hinged lids cost more than two-piece lid-and-base boxes.
  • Finish — matte or gloss lamination is standard; soft-touch, foil, spot UV and embossing add cost. Scratch-proof (anti-scuff) lamination is worth it for dark boxes.
  • Inserts — EVA foam, sponge, paperboard or molded pulp.
  • Quantity per design — splitting 44,000 boxes across four designs still priced like volume because the structure was identical.

Freight: why boxes cost more than their price tag

Rigid boxes ship assembled and take up a lot of space. On one shipment of about 65,000 boxes (523 cartons, roughly 64 cubic meters — a full 40-foot container), duties-paid ocean freight was $8,500, about 13 cents per box. On another, a 40-foot container of ~76,000 two-pack boxes ran about $16,500. Freight rates swing a lot by season and year, so always compare a DDP landed price.

Tariffs matter too: paper boxes from China carried an additional 25% tariff when we shipped in 2024. That's another reason to quote duties-paid.

Avoiding the expensive mistakes

  • Approve a physical sample, not just a digital proof — color and magnet strength never look the same on screen.
  • Specify anti-scuff lamination on dark colors.
  • Inspect before shipping. A pre-shipment inspection catches color drift, weak magnets and crushed corners while you can still fix them.
  • Fill the container. Ordering a few more months of boxes to fill a 40-foot container often costs less per box than a partial shipment.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a custom magnetic box cost?

On real orders we've managed, small printed magnetic boxes ran about $0.49–$0.54 per box at 5,000–20,000 units, and larger magnetic boxes about $0.64–$0.74 at 2,500–6,700 units (factory price, before freight and duties).

Are rigid boxes cheaper than folding cartons?

No. Rigid boxes use thick chipboard wrapped in printed paper and are hand-assembled, so they cost several times more than a folding carton. They're worth it when unboxing and perceived value matter.

What's the minimum order for custom rigid boxes?

Factory-direct, about 1,500–3,000 per design. Prices drop noticeably at 10,000+.

How long do custom rigid boxes take?

Typically 2–4 weeks for samples and 3–5 weeks of production, then about a month of ocean freight to the U.S.
